MALAYSIA FOOD STREET restaurant
Singapore
Brief
The objective was to take a 26,000 square foot space and recreate a typical food street in Malaysia. It comprised of 20 brightly coloured town house facades decorated with old Chinese and Peranakan motifs and their infamous 5ft ways to create a nostalgic setting infused with a modern day food court. Old kopitiam furniture, trishaws, antique accessories and road signs all added weight to the historic theme.
Result
In order to replicate these traditional town houses we took several trips to many different food streets in Malaysia. We investigated how the facades differed through the time periods and colours used. How the local food hawkers operated working out of portable/stationary food carts and how to translate this into our space. In order to capture elements specific to this region and theme, we replicated the food stall signs which are traditionally in English and Chinese, scissor and metal gates as shop shutters, Peranakan tiles and bird cages.
